By Karen Chapman

KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Sanusi Junid has been "relieved of his duties" as International Islamic University Malaysia president with immediate effect.

In his second term now and with two more years to serve, he said he received the letter, dated June 2, on Monday.

The letter was from the Sultan of Pahang, the constitutional head of the university, Sanusi said.

He had previously said he would not step down from the post, which he considered part of his “duty to God and service to the people.”

The former Kedah Mentri Besar said there had been speculation over his post after he had resigned from Umno, following former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s resignation on May 19.

On June 1, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Khalid Nordin that there was no reason for Sanusi’s services to be terminated unless he “played politics” at campus.
