SHAH ALAM, March 28 (Bernama) -- The Selangor government will forgo imposing any charge for the first 20 cubic metres of water for domestic users with individual meter beginning June 1, the office of the menteri besar said in a statement Friday.

The statement said the Selangor government had conducted a study on the mechanism to implement the policy in the interests of the state government, the environment and the public.

It said the objective of the state government in implementing the policy was to reduce the cost of living, particularly for the low-income group.

Nevertheless, the people must continue to use water wisely and responsibly to avoid wastage so that the state's water resources could be maintained for a long time, it said.

At the same time, the state government would introduce measures to diversify the overall sources of water supply soon, it added.

The provision of the free first 20 cubic metres of water was one of the promises contained in the election manifesto of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) for the March 8 general election.
